Second CycleREAL TIME DIGITAL FEEDBACK CONTROL OF VFD FED BY A MULTI-CELL INVERTER"Modern industries in general and the gas industry in particular rely heavily on high power Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to provide operational flexibility for running their plants. Controlled VFDs in the megawatt range are usually connected to the medium-voltage network through converters/inverters. Today, it is hard to connect a single power converter directly to medium voltage grids. Therefore, a new family of multi-cell inverters has emerged as a solution to the problem of medium voltage levels.Multi-cell inverter include an array of single-phase inverters capable of handling higher voltage ratings with lower rating power electronics devices. In this project, a real time digital feedback controller combined with a newly designed Iterative Learning Controller is proposed to efficiently control a VFD fed by a multi-cell inverter. Using an FPGA and a DSP, the newly proposed digital control technique can be implemented in real time. This digital control is characterized by a very fast transient response, low switching losses, and a proper compensation for load disturbances and cyclical fluctuations. This project is a collaborating effort between “Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation” (Japan), RasGas (Qatar), and researchers from Qatar university and two Japanese universities. It is worth noting that RasGas is strongly interested in this project and has pledged a financial support of US$50,000 for the realization of this project."
