QNRF is a member of the Belmont Forum, which is a group of the world's major and emerging funders of global environmental change research. It aims to accelerate delivery of the environmental research needed to remove critical barriers to sustainability by aligning and mobilizing international resources. The Belmont Forum pursues the goals set in the Belmont Challenge by adding value to existing national investments and supporting international partnerships in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scientific endeavours.
The Belmont Forum coordinates funding for collaborative research. Such high-priority research activities improve the way funding agencies collaborate with each other and develop further opportunities for research.
Towards SUSTAINABILITY of soils and groundwater for society call
Given the environmental urgency facing Earth’s surface and socio-ecological systems, the focus of this call is on better understanding mechanisms of long-term change and retroactions to improve our predictive capacity through integrated models development and scenario building (narratives), including how institutions and governance affect soils and groundwater management practices. Attention should also be paid to differentiating and linking between local and global scales. The Critical Zone is typically a local system, where most impacts are local but it is a system influenced by global processes such as climate change and socio-economic drivers that need to be accounted for.
This collaborative research action seeks to advance research within the themes listed below:
- Theme 1. Climate change, carbon cycle, and sustainability of soils and
groundwater
- Theme 2. Highly anthropized ecosystems (including large natural resources
extraction)
- Theme 3. Reconciling short and long-term process to maintain or improve ecosystem
functions
Each project proposal must be submitted by a project consortium consisting of at least three eligible applicants from at least three participating countries.
In compliance with the above themes, QNRF invites the Qatar-based researchers to submit proposals aligned to one or more of the below specific topics:
- Human activities and soil sustainability.
- Impact of climate change on land use in Qatar.
- Salinization of soils and groundwater
(coastal saline intrusion, brackish, desalination, etc).
- Soil pollution, degradation and loss of ecosystem.
Each proposal must be submitted in a form of a consortium consisting of at least three eligible applicants from at least three of the call’s participating funders. QNRF will cover the costs of the Qatar-based teams with a budget that reaches up to US $250,000 per project per year for up to 3 years. Qatar-based teams must be led by a Lead Principal Investigator (LPI).
