More than 80 of the world’s leading experts in the field of photonics gathered in Doha 13-15 Dec. for the Photonics Middle East Conference (PMEC) 2015 hosted by Texas A&M University at Qatar and the Qatar Nonlinear Science Initiative for Qatar’s first-ever conference on the topic.

Developments and solutions in the field of computer vision for healthcare applications were discussed at a workshop at Qatar University. The Kindi Center for Computing Research at QU College of Engineering organised the workshop ‘Computer Vision for Healthcare Applications.’

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), hosted the third International School on Research Impact Assessment (ISRIA). It brought together over 80 delegates from 10 counties to shape the understanding, planning, valorisation and dissemination of research outcomes and their impact on a local and global scale.

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), held a two-day ‘Ibn Al Haytham Days,’ highlighting the Arab scholar. The event was held at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Student Centre, in partnership with the Supreme Education Council (SEC), Sidra Medical and Research Centre, Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) and the US embassy.

Two proposals from Texas A&M University at Qatar have been awarded a total of $9.16 million funding from the sixth batch of National Priorities Research Program – Exceptional Proposals (NPRP–EP). The NPRP-EP program is an extension of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a center of Qatar Foundation Research & Development. The National Priorities Research Program (NPRP) offers a maximum budget of $5 million for a period of up to five years to proposals of exceptional scientific merit requiring resources in excess of the normal level of funding available under the NPRP. The NPRP-EP was created to enable scientists with exceptional ideas, approaches, procedures and models to undertake grand projects aimed at solving key issues for Qatar and the world.

Six projects that were developed within the Qatar Foundation and won the Challenge 22 have been selected to receive expert monitoring, according to the Telegraph newspaper.

The selected projects will be taken to the prototype stage and showcased internationally.

Food distribution companies, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, public officials, NGO’s and local consumers took part in two separate workshops held recently at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q).

Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) will lead a large collaborative research project funded by the National Priorities Research Programme of the Qatar National Research Fund.  The project is scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2015 and will run for three years. Known as TradeLab, short for “Legal Innovation To Empower Development:  Designing and Building an On-Line TradeLab in Qatar,” the project will assemble a global network of experts on international trade and trade law to empower smaller stakeholders, such as Qatar, to reap the full development benefits of global trade and investment rules. 

Manama: Texas A&M University at Qatar has won six of the 13 grants awarded to PhD scientists to conduct research in alignment with the four pillars of the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS). Qatar University won five grants, while Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar were offered the other two grants.

Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), has won two Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) grants to support research efforts of its College of Science and Engineering. 
Both grants are for three years  each and focus biomedical and biological science research being undertaken in Qatar.
