Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) launches second cycle of Young Scientists Research Experience Program (YSREP)

Following the success of the first cycle of its Young Scientists Research Experience Program (YSREP) that was launched in May 2010, Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) is pleased to announce the launch of the second cycle.

The program provides essential support in all areas of science and technology to young Qatari and expatriate scientists starting or consolidating their own independent research team or research.

YSREP complements QNRF’s other funding programmes, which include the National Priorities Research Program (NPRP), the Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP), and the Secondary School Research Experience Program (SSREP).

Dr. Abdul Sattar Al-Taie, QNRF Executive Director, said:

Given the success of the first cycle of the program and the desire of some academic institutions in Qatar, QNRF decided to have two funding cycles of this program annually. This will provide timely support to young scientists in Qatar to start their own research projects and independent research teams. The program is now an established milestone in building research capacity and sustaining the research culture in Qatar.

Candidates applying for YSREP funding must be no older than 35-years, hold a doctorate or terminal academic research degree in their field of expertise, and have achieved at least two peer-reviewed scientific publications. At the time of submitting the proposal, the candidate should be affiliated to a local institution in Qatar and must remain so for the entire duration of the project.

The YSREP funding cycle is semi-annual and offers funds of US $100,000 per year, per project. The project can last for up to three years. Young scientists leading the project can work individually or with a research team from the same submitting institution .

Dr. Munir Tag, YSREP Program Manager, will hold three public presentations about the program:

  • 13 January 2011, 10-11am: Qatar University, Conference Hall of the Administration Building
  • 17 January 2011, 10-11am: Education City, Carnegie Mellon University-Qatar, Lecture Hall 1131
  • 31 January 2011, 12.30-1.30pm: Hamad Medical Corporation, Medical Education Center, Class 1 & 2
