Workshop brings together researchers to discuss entrepreneurship challenges

INSIGHTS into entrepreneurship have been provided to early career researchers from Qatar and the UK who explored diverse themes, new perspectives, and potential collaborations, through a unique knowledge and networking opportunity at Qatar Foundation partner university HEC Paris. HEC Paris partnered with HeriotWatt University, UK, to deliver the Entrepreneurship 2020 workshop at its Doha premises from 29-31 March 2016, with the aim of cultivating Qatar’s research capacity and enhancing its entrepreneurial culture.

QNRF recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). The agreement, which aims to pave the way for cooperation between the two entities, was signed at the Qatar Foundation Annual Research Conference 2016 (ARC'16).

CMU-Q professor gets grant for research on cyber crimes

A research proposal that will delve into using natural language processing in Arabic in identifying cyber crimes was awarded a grant by the National Priorities Research Programme (NPRP) of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF). Anis Charfi, associate teaching professor of information systems at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), received the award for the proposal “Arabic Author Profiling for Cyber Security,” along with fellow principal investigators Paolo Rosso of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, and Abdelmajid Ben Hamadou from CETIC - Centre de Recherche en Informatique, Multimédia et Traitement Numérique des Données de Sfax, Tunisia.

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has awarded prizes to the top three research projects presented by students in the 8th cycle of its Undergraduate Research Experience Program (UREP). The awardees were announced on Monday 21st March 2016 at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has awarded top three research projects presented by students in the eighth cycle of its Undergraduate Research Experience Programme (UREP). The wining projects covered research areas, including biomedicine and health; engineering; and technology. First place in the competition went to a team from Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ). Titled ‘Investigation of the Performances of the Gas Electron Multiplier for Collider Experiments’, the project involved running experimental tests of the gas electron multiplier (GEM) under different conditions for future use in applications such as high energy collider experiments.

QNRF announces programme winners at Annual Research Conference 2016

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has announced the awardees of its flagship National Priorities Research Program (NPRP), and of its inaugural Path towards Personalized Medicine (PPM) grant. The announcements came during the Qatar Foundation Annual Research Conference (ARC’16), which was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre last week. QNRF,a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D),presented grants to 89 research proposals across 18 institutions in Qatar for the ninth cycle of the NPRP. The five awardees of the first cycle ofPPM were also disclosed.

QNRF Hosts Workshop on Sustainable Energy

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) recently hosted a high-level sustainable energy workshop in partnership with the European Commission and the British Embassy Doha. The event discussed two key technologies, ‘Carbon Dioxide Capture,Sequestration and Reuse’ and ‘Concentrated Solar Power to Produce Electricity or Hydrogen’. The topics reflect a joint commitment to the development of sustainable technologies in a concerted effort to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Carnegie Mellon University Concludes Annual "Meeting of the Minds" Symposium

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) has concluded the 10th annual "Meeting of the Minds" undergraduate research symposium. A research project demonstrating how bacteria found in Qatar’s sand can be used to purify water won the Best Project award. The research study titled, "Characterizing a Novel Bacillus-like Phage from Qatar’s Sand" was conducted by biological sciences student, Aya Abd Elaal, under the mentorship of Annette Vincent, assistant teaching professor of biological sciences at Carnegie Mellon in Qatar. The study explores using bacteriophages extracted from Qatar’s sand to disinfect water.
