QNRF awards three exceptional proposals

Hamad Medical Corporation & Texas A&M University at Qatar To Benefit From Funding Programme Of Qatar Foundation Research & Development

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), has announced the awards of three research proposals submitted to the sixth batch of its National Priorities Research Program – Exceptional Proposals (NPRP–EP).
Hamad Medical Corporation and Texas A&M University at Qatar will benefit from funding through NPRP–EP, which offers additional resources beyond those available under the National Priorities Research Program.
By investing in cutting edge-research, QNRF is enhancing a culture that supports Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development on its mission to build Qatar’s innovation and technology capacity, and help the nation develop into a hub of research excellence through QF’s science and research pillar, QF R&D.
“QNRF has developed the NPRP-EP, and several other funding programmes, in order to nurture Qatar’s research environment by addressing the key areas outlined in the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS),” said Dr Abdul Sattar Al-Taie, Executive Director of QNRF. 
“I am proud to say that all three proposals awarded funding under the sixth batch of the NPRP-EP hold very high potential for knowledge advancement and innovation breakthrough, which warrants the extra investment being made by QNRF.”
The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has been awarded funding for its proposal titled ‘Sphingolipids in childhood asthma and obesity’, which is being led by Dr Ibrahim Janahi, Head of Paediatric Pulmonology Section at HMC.
Dr Janahi’s research will investigate the relationship between asthma and obesity among children in Qatar, by studying novel therapies for these common diseases. It will effectively combine genomic and metabolomic technologies that will not only provide knowledge for asthma pathogenesis in Qatar, but also for the wider region, which could ultimately place Qatar at the forefront of modern research regarding asthma in children.
Additionally, two proposals from Texas A&M University at Qatar have been awarded funding under the NPRP-EP. The first is titled ‘Synthesis of Novel and Sustainable Functionalized Linear and Cyclic Polymers via Olefin Metathesis’, and seeks to develop novel and environmentally friendly ways in which to synthesise polymers that, like polyolefins, are produced on an immense scale in Qatar.
This project is being led by Professor Hassan Bazzi, Assistant Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, and Professor of Chemistry, at Texas A&M University at Qatar, in collaboration with Professor Robert Grubbs, a Nobel Laureate in chemistry, from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Through the development of systems where active catalysts are separated and recycled, the project aims to synthesise durable and environmentally friendly elastomers, which, for example, could allow for the development of more environmentally friendly synthetic tires. 
The second proposal from Texas A&M University at Qatar to be awarded funding is titled ‘Design of Novel Catalysts and Processes for carbon dioxide (CO2) Conversion from Micro to Macro scale’. This seeks to develop new catalysts and novel technologies that scale the conversion of CO2, which could significantly impact gas processing technology and CO2 conversion not only in Qatar, but worldwide.
Led by Dr Nimir ElBashir Director of the Fuel Characterisation Lab, and Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M Qatar, in collaboration with Total E&P Qatar, the project involves building the infrastructure necessary to support large scale catalyst synthesis in Qatar. 
Considering its extreme relevance to Qatar’s thriving natural gas-based energy and chemical industries, this project also has the potential to advance Qatar’s reputation as a centre for energy-related R&D.
“Each awarded proposal has undergone a rigorous three-stage evaluation that began with the initial research proposal vetting process, performed by an expert panel within Qatar,” said Noor Al-Merekhi, NPRP Manager. “This was then followed by a full scientific evaluation, conducted by seven globally renowned peer reviewers, ending with a programmatic review by an expert panel in Qatar.”
