Talks on stronger educational, research cooperation in progress: Ambassador

THE Ambassador of Sweden to Qatar, HE Ewa Polano, has said that she hopes to establish a deeper level of cooperation in the field of education between Qatar and Sweden.
This, according to her, would include cooperation in research as well as more students from Qatar attending higher educational institutions in Sweden.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune in a recent interview, the ambassador noted that cooperation in this sector was in progress, and that meetings between Swedish university representatives and Qatar's researchers and officials had already taken place to discuss the details of future collaborations.
The ambassador continued,"I am working a lot with Swedish universities and their globalisation programmes, and I would like them to come here. The best and the biggest university in Scandinavia is the Lund University, in Sweden. Officials were here last November and we had productive meetings with Qatar Foundation and with Qatar National Research Fund's (QNRF) Executive Director Dr Abdul Sattar al Taie and Director of Programmes at QNRF Dr Rekha S Pillai, along with several researchers. We also had meetings with Qatar University (QU) officials which included QU President Dr Sheikha al Misnad and researchers from engineering and other faculties."
There was also a delegation from QNRF, headed by Dr Taie, visiting Sweden in the first week of November and they went to the Lund University, the Karlinska Institutete along with several other universities, the ambassador said.
The QNRF team was invited to Sweden by the Chairman of STINT - The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education.
It is worth noting that the Lund University is one of northern Europe's oldest universities and Scandinavia's largest institutions for education and research. The university, located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden, traces its roots back to 1666. It is consistently ranked among the world's top 100 universities. Furthermore, it ranks among the best universities in Northern Europe.
In addition to collaborating on research, the ambassador hoped that students from Qatar would consider Sweden as a destination for their university studies. The ambassador said,"I want Swedish universities to come here and set up joint research facilities, and also Qatari students to visit Sweden to attend universities there."
Not only students, but also tourists should consider Sweden, the ambassador noted, explaining that there has been an increase in visa applications to the country since the Embassy's inauguration in May, last year. Similarly, she expected more Swedish visitors to visit Qatar in near future.
"I would like to see more Swedish tourists coming here to discover the distinguished cultural and lovely shopping experiences in the beautiful city of Doha, and also more Qataris to visit Sweden. We've already seen an increase of 30 percent in visa applications. So, more and more people are travelling," the ambassador concluded.
