HMC hosts first international pain conference

HAMAD Medical Corporation (HMC) hosted the first Qatar International Pain Conference at the Qatar National Convention Center recently. It brought together 500 participants from Qatar and the abroad.
The aim of the event, organised by HMC's department of anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Unit and Perioperative Medicine in collaboration with Academic Health System (AHS) and support of Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), was to share the latest knowledge about modern-day pain management.
The event was attended by pain specialists, general physicians, medical students and delegates from academic, government and private institutions.
"We organised an event featuring experts from the GCC, the US, Europe and Australia," said Professor Dr Marco AE Marcus, conference sponsor and chairman of HMC's Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pain and Perioperative Medicine.
The conference was also an opportunity to celebrate the growth of HMC's Pain Unit, an energetic environment that integrates pain therapy with translational research and teaching.
HMC's 'pain team', an integral part of the Anaesthesia Department, comprises multidisciplinary healthcare professionals working with patients living with pain such as cancer patients and those recovering from major surgery.
"Having a specialised pain management service is important in reducing the patient's length of stay in the hospital and improving the patient's overall hospital experience. In recent years, pain therapy has transitioned to an evidence-based practice as hospitals around the world have started examining what it means to provide quality care for patients, both in terms of medical care and hospital-based patient experience and satisfaction," said Prof Marcus.
Dr Nicholas Scott, conference chairman and deputy chairman of HMC's Department of Anaesthesiology, ICU and Perioperative Medicine said,"Our department is rapidly tranformed from a service department into an academic one to establish and maintain the highest possible levels of care and performance for patients. Activities such as this conference helps us to advance the quality of our research and provide the best evidence-based care for patients living with pain."
