13 Proposals Awarded To Postdoctoral Scholars Across Qatar
Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), has announced the winners of the second cycle of its Postdoctoral Research Awards (PDRA). Out of 101 peer-reviewed research proposals submitted from research institutions across Qatar, 13 grants were awarded to PhD scientists to conduct research in alignment with the four pillars of the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS).
Among the 13 awarded proposals, six went to Texas A&M University at Qatar and five to Qatar University. The two remaining grants were awarded to Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar.
Two faculty members from American University of Sharjah (AUS) were recently awarded an $800,000 grant by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) through the National Priorities Research Program (NPRP), the flagship funding programme of QNRF.
The funding is to support their research proposal entitled 'Guidelines for Enhancing the Performance of FRP-strengthened Concrete Beams under Fire and Harsh Environment Exposures'.
The proposal investigates the strength and behaviour of externally strengthened reinforcing concrete (RC) beams with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates under such severe exposures.
Dr Rami Hawileh, associate professor in Civil Engineering, is the Lead Principal Investigator for the research, while Dr Jamal Abdalla, professor in Civil Engineering, is the Principal Investigator.
The winners of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s (SC) Challenge 22 innovation award were announced during a ceremony held at Qatar National Convention Centre on Monday evening.
Following a successful roadshow introducing the concept to the GCC, more than 300 applicants from all over the region submitted their ideas for consideration. Eighteen finalists presented their ideas to a jury before the winners were eventually chosen.

The two winning proposals, awarded to researchers pursuing doctorates at Qatar University, will commence in September 2015.
Aligned with the pillars of the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS), both of the proposals fall under the Energy and Environment Pillar. Shoaib Mallick, advised by Dr Farid Touati, is pursuing a project entitled ‘Integrated Acoustoelectronic Sensors for sensing of saline water vapour in natural gas flow’, while Abdul Mannan Rauf, advised by Dr Atif Iqbal, is pursuing a project entitled ‘Development of a novel multilevel unified power controller (M-UPC) for smart grid applications’.

The plight of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 (MH370) is one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, but an interdisciplinary research team led by Texas A&M University at Qatar mathematician Goong Chen has theorized the ill-fated plane plunged vertically into the southern Indian Ocean in March 2014.
The researchers' computer simulations lead to the forensic assertion that a 90-degree nosedive explains the lack of debris or spilled oil in the water near where the plane is presumed to have crashed. Award Finalists Include Team From Supreme Council Of Health
In partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institution of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), CRDF Global, Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), recently announced the award finalists of the 2014 U.S-Qatar-MENA Infectious Disease Research Initiative, which includes a team led by a researcher from the Supreme Council of Health in Qatar (SCH). The initiative was announced during the Endemic and Emerging Viral Infectious Diseases of Priority North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) meeting that convened in Doha, Qatar from May 26-29, 2014.
