New Northwestern University in Qatar soccer team to encourage female participation in sports

In a bid to inspire young women in Qatar to increase their involvement in the world of sports, students at Northwestern University in Qatar have initiated the university's first women's soccer team. Motivated in part by a recent study conducted by Assistant Professor in Residence Geoff Harkness, which showed that females represent only 7.3% of athletes registered to sports federations and clubs, students Maha Al-Ansari and AlDana Al Misned recruited members for the soccer team in hopes of encouraging more females to join and be active members of the sports community.

QNRF launches a new cycle of funding for Junior Scientists

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has announced the launch of the fourth cycle of its Junior Scientists Research Experience Program (JSREP), the increasingly competitive funding Program for Junior scientists.

Researchers,aged 40 or under, are now invited to submit a Letter of Intent (LoI) for their proposed projects prior to the deadline of 17 December, 2012, with the final deadline for proposal submissions being noon, Doha time, 31 December, 2012.

The event serves as an opportunity to welcome delegates to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Doha, and to introduce them to the various sustainability initiatives and climate action solutions being undertaken by Qatari organisations.

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, has announced the results of the third cycle of its research funding programme for junior scientists.

QNRF’s Junior Scientists Research Experience Program (JSREP) aims to develop critical thinking skills and foster a vibrant research culture in Qatar by supporting junior scientists, both Qatari nationals and other residents, in all disciplines. A total of 16 junior scientists have previously participated in the programme. This year, grants worth a total of $1.78 million have been awarded to nine winning projects from four academic and research institutions.

Texas A&M at Qatar partners with QCRI and QNRF to offer programming workshop for school students

Twenty-one students in grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 from schools around Qatar designed their own Android mobile app game as part of a recent two-day workshop on mobile app development. The workshop was organized and offered by Dr. Eman A. Fituri from the Qatar Computing Research Institute in Texas A&M University at Qatar’s STEM Hub, a joint initiative of Texas A&M at Qatar and the QNRF that aims to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning in students across Qatar.
