Qatar Foundation displays a strong commitment to sustainability

Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development stood alongside its affiliate centres at today launch of the Qatar Sustainability Expo to reveal a host of innovative environmental projects. The sustainability exposition, which is being held at the Doha Exhibition Centre until 7 December, was inaugurated by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, President of COP18/CMP8. The event serves as an opportunity to welcome delegates to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Doha, and to introduce them to the various sustainability initiatives and climate action solutions being undertaken by Qatari organizations. The exhibition stand assembled by Qatar Foundation and its members consisted of highly interactive and attractive displays that clarify how knowledge is being used to tackle climate change, and to improve the country carbon footprint. Visitors were especially drawn to the cutting-edge electric solar-powered vehicle on display at the Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec) stand. During the launch, Qatar Foundation well-informed staff members engaged with COP18 delegates, environmental experts, leaders and entrepreneurs to discuss the latest green advances, and their plans to improve public awareness of how to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Dr Abdul Sattar Al-Taie, executive director of the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), highlighted the importance of participating in the Qatar Sustainability Expo, as it is likely to open up important avenues for future research collaborations. Research and innovation to improve Qatar sustainability in the areas of energy and the environment is one of our core focuses at QNRF. QNRF mission is to fund and promote original, competitively-selected research projects that address the national priority needs of Qatar, including the critical need for ensuring a sustainable post-carbon future for the country, said Dr Al-Taie. “Our presence at the Qatar Sustainability Expo highlights some of the key research projects we are funding on energy and the environment,he added. Dr Khalid K. Al Hajri, the chairman and chief executive officer of Qatar Solar Technologies, discussed the positive impact of solar applications and technologies on the environment. Qatar Solar Technologies welcomes the start of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP18) and is proud to be participating in the Qatar Sustainability Expo in showcasing innovative uses for solar technologies, said Dr Al Hajri. For solar entrepreneurs and innovators there is an enormous opportunity to develop the next generation of solar technologies and applications that protect the environment and reduce CO2 levels both locally, regionally and internationally. He added, We will continue to work with Qatar Foundation, SolarWorld and other like-minded organisations to showcase solar initiatives in Qatar that aim to inspire and encourage the development of innovative and creative uses of solar energy. The solar industry is just beginning in the Middle East and the future is bright. Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), QScience, and the Quranic Gardens, were among some of the other Qatar Foundation members who put together impressive displays. QEERI interactive exhibit included a carbon calculator, while students from VCUQatar presented a range of recycled furniture items. Qatar Foundation is committed to sustainability and its centres are actively involved in numerous areas of research, technology and education. They also promote international collaborations that support the development and implementation of sustainability ventures. COP18 is expected to attract about 17,000 delegates and visitors from 194 nations making it Doha largest ever international conference. Attendees will represent the United Nations, its specialised agencies, governments, non-government and inter-government agencies, civil societies and media from all over the world.
