QNRF AWARDS TWO RESEARCH PROPOSALS TO GRADUATE STUDENTS

Awarded Projects Relate To The Energy And Environment Pillar of the Qatar National Research Strategy

Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF), a member of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), has announced the winners of the third cycle of its Graduate Student Research Award (GSRA) programme. The two winning proposals, awarded to researchers pursuing doctorates at Qatar University, will commence in September 2015.
Aligned with the pillars of the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS), both of the proposals fall under the Energy and Environment Pillar.  Shoaib Mallick, advised by Dr Farid Touati, is pursuing a project entitled ‘Integrated Acoustoelectronic Sensors for sensing of saline water vapour in natural gas flow’, while Abdul Mannan Rauf, advised by Dr Atif Iqbal, is pursuing a project entitled ‘Development of a novel multilevel unified power controller (M-UPC) for smart grid applications’.
By investing in cutting-edge research, QNRF is enhancing a scientific culture that supports Qatar Foundation (QF) on its mission to build Qatar’s innovation and technology capacity; helping the nation develop into a hub of research excellence through QF’s Science and Research Pillar QF R&D.
By providing support to outstanding scholars pursuing doctoral degrees at approved institutions in Qatar, the GSRA programme aims to promote postgraduate education in Qatar, and contribute to human capital development.
“GSRA is one of the capacity building programmes offered by QNRF that allows graduates to gain significant knowledge and experience in pursuit of a career in research. We, at QNRF, believe that providing such opportunities to young scientists is essential for nurturing Qatar’s research talent pool,” said Dr Abdulnasser Al-Ansari, Deputy Executive Director of QNRF. “Through such programmes, QNRF continues to play an active role in helping achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Providing an opportunity for faculty and researchers to identify outstanding graduate students from inside and outside Qatar, the GSRA programme provides support for up to four years. The programme helps ensure the continuity of research-based doctoral education while building awareness of local research opportunities.
While the primary benefit of the GSRA award is to assist in building human capital, it also aims to boost Qatar’s reputation as a budding research hub by offering graduates world-class education designed to lay firm foundations for a knowledge-based economy.
