In 2008, Joel Malek, a DNA-sequencing specialist from Boston, Massachusetts, packed his bags and left one east coast for another, 6,500 miles away in Qatar. At the time, the Arab state was recruiting skilled scientists and academics to teach and conduct research in its 14-square-kilometre 'Education City', which was under construction on the outskirts of Doha. Malek was given generous funding to set up a genomics research lab for Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), the first US medical school to open a campus in the country, in 2001.

Scientists at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute of the Qatar Foundation (QEERI/QF) announced the discovery of three new extrasolar planets using an optical Earth-based telescope established by QF as part of the ongoing Qatar Exoplanet Survey (QES).

A 3-day workshop “Sustainable Materials and Materials for Sustainability” held on May 8-10 at Qatar University (QU) brought together over 50 experienced and early career researchers from multidisciplinary backgrounds such as materials science, chemistry, engineering, and energy and environment. The workshop was co-organized by QU Center for Advanced Materials (CAM) and Ulster University under the Qatar-UK Research Networking Programme, and sponsored by British Council and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) in collaboration with UK Science and Innovation Network and UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
